Local music video productions |
Firstly, all local producers deserve to be given a merit for their work. Production of music videos is no longer the same as it was ten years ago, a clear sign of development in the industry and the mind set of the producers.
Local tv is now filled with local music videos from different producers, out showing their skills and talents in their productions. At least we are all proud that some local productions have the capability to be aired on TV channels such as Channel O and Music TV (MTV).
The introduction of TV programs such as Bon and Bred and Peoples Choice and awards such as Ngoma and the newly introduced Bon and Bred awards have increased competition amongst producers and provided a basis of motivation. One definitely gets a reward for his hard work and efforts.
The advancement of technology has also brought cutting edged equipment at the fingers tips of all, you don't need to robe a bank to buy an editing system or camera, and prices have now gone down making it easy to start up your own video production house.
Despite the means and ways of production, skills and talents involved, what counts at the end of the day is the quality of the produce. Local videos are of different quality depending on how creative the producer is. In these modern times It's not a matter of professional equipment or software to produce an award winning music video. It's the way you plan and create things. This is proven from our local productions which are based on creativeness. Most of them are low budgeted and use armature equipment, but these are the same music videos which win awards and top the charts.
You can have professional or armature equipment but if you don't understand the basics of video production you are doomed for failure. How can you produce a video on an HD(high definition) camera when you produce shaky pictures on a small handcam? One secret of video production is knowing how to utilize what you have and can afford, effectively and wisely.
It’s all about understanding the basics of the industry from planning to distribution. We always ask ourselves why Zambian videos are not frequently seen on international music tv channels. One thing you should understand is that there are international standards of quality and if your production does not meet them, its impossible for you to excel. Since most local production techniques are based on creativity, its wise for the producers to add professionalism in their creative process, this will help see videos go to another level. We have the skills and talents to top Africa's music video productions, only if we can take time to organize our books, arrange them in a way that they will be easy to locate when needed. By organizing our books, we shall be adding our talents with professionalism. If we can produce the music videos aired on TV today minus understanding the production process very well, then what kind of videos can we produce when we fully understand the production process?
Producers must get basic professional knowledge and be extremely creative. It’s had to see a jib or crane been used in a music video, it’s also had to see rules been fully applied.
To all the producers around Zambia, go professional and aim to meet a standard in your productions, don't just produce for Zambia, produce for the world. If it means selling your shoes to produce the best video, do it.
Finally, develop interest in acquiring information on professional video production, the internet and out standing professionals are one cheaper way. Create time to learn from your friends through their productions.
Get motivation through watching music videos done by big production houses. Also if possible, go to school and learn about video production in detail, you might be lacking some information to make you the best producer in the world.
